FAQ

We understand that the announcement of Castilion Primary School's closure will raise many questions for parents and carers. These FAQs are intended to provide clarity and reassurance about what happens next. We will continue to update them as transition arrangements develop, and further information becomes available.

1. Why is Castilion Primary School closing?

The school has experienced a significant decline in pupil numbers due to falling local birth rates. This has reduced funding and created financial challenges, making it increasingly difficult to sustain high-quality education in the longer term. Following careful consideration, the Secretary of State for Education has approved the school's closure.

2. When will the school close?

Castilion Primary School will permanently close on 31 August 2027. The school will remain fully open throughout the 2026/27 academic year.

3. Will my child's education be affected before the school closes?

We are committed to maintaining high standards of teaching, learning, safeguarding and pastoral care until closure. Children's education and wellbeing will remain our highest priorities.

4. Will my child be guaranteed a place at another school?

We will work closely with Bexley Local Authority to support families in securing alternative school places for September 2027, including opportunities within other Trust schools. Further information about admissions arrangements will be shared with parents.

5. Will parents be able to choose which school their child attends?

Parents will be able to express preferences for alternative schools in accordance with the relevant admissions arrangements. Places will depend on availability and admissions criteria. Bexley Local Authority will provide guidance on the process.

6. Can my child move to another school before September 2027?

Yes. Parents may apply for an alternative school place through the normal in-year admissions process. Applications will be subject to availability and the relevant admissions arrangements.

7. What support will be available for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

We will work closely with families, Bexley Local Authority and receiving schools to ensure individual needs are considered, and appropriate transition arrangements are planned. This will include specific consideration for children with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

A dedicated SEND parents meeting will take place on Tuesday 24 November 2026 at 1:30pm.

8. Will transport assistance be available if my child's new school is further away?

Eligibility for home-to-school transport assistance will be determined by Bexley Local Authority in accordance with its transport policy and statutory responsibilities. Families will be provided with information about eligibility and how to apply.

9. What will happen to the teachers and support staff?

We recognise that closure creates uncertainty for staff. The Trust is one employer and will continue to provide appropriate support and review staffing throughout the year.  You will be aware of the two teachers that have been deployed to St Paulinus following the half-term. We remain committed to maintaining continuity of education and care for pupils until closure.

10. What will happen to children currently at Castilion?

All pupils who would otherwise remain at Castilion beyond August 2027 will need an alternative school place. We will work with families and the Local Authority to support a smooth transition, taking account of children's ages, educational needs and individual circumstances.

11. Will siblings be able to attend the same new school?

We understand the importance of keeping siblings together. Families will be supported in exploring suitable schools, although placements will depend on availability and the relevant admissions criteria. We will raise any specific concerns with the Local Authority.

12. What is the six-week listening period, and can the closure decision be changed?

The decision to close Castilion Primary School has received final approval from the Secretary of State for Education.

The six-week Listening Period is an opportunity for parents and carers to share questions, concerns and suggestions about transition arrangements. Although it is not a consultation on the closure decision, feedback will help shape the support provided to children and families.

13. How can parents share their views during the Listening Period?

Three meetings will take place in November following the listening period.

Senior leaders from the Trust and school, alongside representatives from Bexley Local Authority, will be available to answer questions and discuss transition arrangements.

Parents can also provide feedback through:

  • Website: www.castilion.apat.org.uk
  • Email: trust@apat.org.uk
  • Paper forms: Available from the school office

The Listening Period closes on Friday 11 December 2026.

14. How will children be supported emotionally during the transition?

We recognise that changing schools can be unsettling. Staff will continue to provide reassurance and pastoral support, working with families and receiving schools to prepare children for the move. Transition activities will be planned to help pupils feel confident and supported.

15. What happens after the Listening Period ends?

Following the Listening Period, the Trust will review the feedback received and work with Bexley Local Authority to develop transition arrangements that respond to families' needs.

We will continue to communicate with parents, provide updates on school placements and offer support throughout the remainder of the academic year.
